Bahamas Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews

Royal Oasis Resort 02/17/03
Reviewers Rating: Great
My wife and I stayed at the Royal Oasis Resort and Casino in Freeport for 4 nights from 2/6-2/10. We were looking for an inexpensive 4 night get a way with a direct flight from Boston. Our expectations were low due to the cheap price of the trip $399+tax per person for air, transfers and hotel. The charter company was called Laker Airlines and they did a great job. We were in Freeport in under 3 hours. Here are my opions on the trip:

Resort: The Royal Oasis resort is located about 10 minutes from the airport right next to the International Bazaar. It is not on the beach but the hotel does provide a regular shuttle to Xanadu Beach. The resort complex is large and consists of 2 hotels, the Holiday Inn and the Crowne Plaza,a large casino, amazing pool and waterslide, kids club, spa, shopping center and nice fitness center. The hotels are across the street from each other and share restaurants, bars and pools. We chose to stay at the Holiday Inn because it was $80 cheaper for the 4 night stay. We had a superior non smoking room and there was nothing superior about it. The Holiday Inn is a little run down and could use a face lift, but it really isn't that bad. The Crown Plaza was much nicer and there seem to be less kids and a more subdued atmosphere. Remember you can choose the Holiday Inn and spend all day at the Crowne Plaza if you like.

Restaurants and bars: There are a number of restaurant choices on the property and also in the direct vincinity of the resort. They definetly offer affordable breakfast and lunch choices, the dinners can be a little pricey but not outrageous. We had the breakfast buffet every morning for $10 and it was fine. We also ate at the Italian retaurant and thought it was just O.K. The best meal we had was at a place called Iries located in the Lucaya complex. The food and service were amazing and the prices very reasonable for an upscale place $13-$25 for an entree.

Beaches and Pools: Each hotel has it own pools and hot tubs. They are pretty good and relatively clean. They share a very large simulated beach pool with a waterslide. You could easily hang out there all day. The hotels provide a shuttle to Xanadu beach. It is pretty nice but a little rocky. We thought the beach at the Lucaya Resort Complex was much nicer. Take the local bus for $1, it is fun and convenient. Lucaya is a great place, complete with great beach bars, shopping, and lots of beach activities. They are very laid back about letting you use the hotel pools and restrooms.

Overall we thought that this was a great trip and an incredible deal. Freeport is a great island and very upscale compared to most caribbean islands. The locals are extremely friendly and we were never hassled, a rarity in most islands. Freeport can be a little expensive but there are plenty of affordable options.

The Royal Oasis does offer an all Inclusive option. I wouldn't reccomend pre purchasing it,many of the meal choices didn't look impressive and it only included bottom shelve liqours. If you change your mind you can always add it when you get there.
